Simergent ASN Poster - Archimedes™ APD Cycler Usability Study Demonstrates Safety and Ease of Use
Usability issues are a significant barrier to PD therapy adoption. Simergent’s gravity-based Archimedes™ PD cycler was designed not only to address patient quality of life, but also to resolve usability challenges, offer an easy-to-learn user interface, in-home mobility during dialysis, quiet operation, and shrouded solution line connectors to potentially reduce touch contamination.
Summative human factors usability testing was performed for the Archimedes™ APD cycler among 15 prevalent PD patients/caregivers and 15 PD nurses (RNs) in in conjunction with Indiana University and Northwestern University. An independent consultant observed participants perform tasks using the Archimedes™ cycler. For Simulated Use Tasks evaluated, 97.3% were deemed Success across all users (96.8% for patients, 97.8% for RNs).
Given the high Success rate, the patient-centric APD cycler was demonstrated to be safe and effective for intended users & use environments. Based on these results after only 2 hours of training, it suggests that PD patients & PD nurses could easily operate the cycler with no unacceptable usability risks.
Archimedes™ was granted FDA 510(k) clearance in Oct 2025 after the study.
